CBD Oil for Pain Relief: Is it Possible?

People suffering from chronic pain tend to have difficulty in finding long lasting relief. But now that CBD oil has reached the media and market. It is thought to be the best solutions especially when there is a very limited solution in dealing with chronic pain.

Pain medication may give temporary relief but finding the source of the pain and eliminating it can be very challenging. Often times, prescribed pharmaceuticals tend to carry very bad side effects that can either improve qualities life or degenerate.

As early as 400 A.D. CBD or cannabis has been used as a means of medication but only until recently media ignored the stigma of cannabis and tries to understand its benefits.

Defining CBD and Relation of THC

Both Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are chemical compounds that are derived from the cannabis plant. It is proven to give promising results as pain relievers. Since the legalization of cannabis has spread worldwide, many researchers have continued to study with ease about the plant’s therapeutic properties.

A great number of people have already decided to use CBD as a pain reliever but others are hesitating due to its relation with cannabis. As CBD has very low THC levels or purely CBD only, it does not cause any euphoric “high” tendencies or any psychoactive effects.

Relieving Pain with CBD Oil

Naturally, the body produces two types of cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) that is responsible for maintaining the homeostasis of the body and some vital functions like pain. CB1 receptors are found mostly in the brain while CB2 receptors are located all over the body as part of the immune systems, regulating pain and inflammation.

When CBD interacts with CB2 receptors it immediately starts working and provides an indirect approach in the activation of non-cannabinoid receptors. Take for example Glycine receptors are inhibitory types that are found in the central nervous system. It plays an important role in perceiving pain. Researchers have observed that cannabinoids like CBD highly potentiates these receptors or increase the likelihood of their effects. Resulting in improving the wellness of the user and possible treatment for neuropathic pain.

In addition to that CBD is capable of reducing the inflammation by restricting the re-uptake of the neurotransmitter called adenosine. CBD acts this way by limiting equilibrative nucleoside transporter 1 (ENT1). By decreasing its activity of re-uptake, the level of adenosine in the brain increase, in return decreases the inflammation throughout the body.

CBD is used in various types of pain that are often connected with certain ailments like arthritis. Here are some types of pain which CBD can help with.

  • Joint Pain
  • Back Pain
  • Muscle Pain and Spasms
  • Chronic Pain
  • Acute Pain
  • Neuropathic Pain
  • And many more.

When To Take CBD

Before adding CBD to your treatment regime, it is important to consult with the physician about using it. So far, data concerning CBD shows it is safe with fewer side effects. There are some people who seek pain relief who use other pharmaceuticals like antidepressants and antibiotics. Since information about the drug interaction of CBD to other drugs is limited. It can be dangerous with little information available even on the web.

Types of CBD

There are many ways to consume CBD oil, one of the easiest way is to take it sublingually or place a drop of the solution under the tongue for a minute. Depending on what type of pain you are experiencing and preference you can take CBD as edibles, salves, vape, transdermal patches, capsules, and even gummies.

For proper medication and dosage assessment, always ask a professional cannabis doctor and follow the instructions written on the product.

How to Use CBD Safely

After the popularity of marijuana, now comes the new trendy supplement known as CBD. It hit the market just recently and has been appearing in a lot of social media. Users sharing their opinion about it and what it can do for you. Unfortunately, some who tried using it may not have enough information or have little guidance in using it.

Currently, there hasn’t been any dangerous information misusing CBD, however for the safety and increase its effectiveness, here are some tips that you may need to know.

Hearing About CBD

According to the July 2015  journal Cannabis and cannabinoid, Research found that most folks who try CBD for treating health conditions learn about CBD from a friend, family, or the internet and not from a medical professional like a physician.

Even though the effectiveness of CBD is celebrated on social media and other forms, the research about it and studies conducted are still continuing. Information about CBD is limited about its efficacy, safety, and most importantly the appropriate dosage, commented by Salomeh Keyhani, M.D., a professor at the University of California, San Francisco, he published research on medical marijuana use. Although there is some research expressing that cannabis products may help regulate some health ailments.

Despite the awareness and benefits received from CBD. legal issues should be considered, especially on what state you reside in. Some websites that sell cannabis or CBD products often equip with states location to determine the legality of CBD and what requirements needed.

Understanding What CBD Really Is

When choosing CBD as your supplement, it is important to know how to properly determine what CBD the quality of the product. Some States may offer only CBD oil while the other states allow different kinds of CBD like pills, rubs, drops, and vape pens. Here are some tips you should know about CBD.

  1. It’s not a miracle drug

Research about CBD mostly expresses how many health benefits it can give to the user like treating epilepsy. In reality, the FDA just recently approved a CBD drug called Epidiolex for a very rare form of the condition. Other studies have proved great therapeutic effects on other health conditions such as multiple sclerosis, pain, and anxiety. It is obvious that CBD covers only a limited range of conditions in the medical field. This means it is best to understand which ailments CBD can really help.

2. Seek advice with a physician

Even though CBD has limited information and is a new possible treatment. It is important to inform the physician of all the drug taken. Whether it is a supplement or medication drug for certain ailments, some medication may not go well with CBD.

In fact, some states require a recommendation from a doctor before they can even use CBD as part of medication. Even if the health care provider is still new about CBD, they are allowed to recommend another healthcare professional who is knowledgeable enough.

3. CBD as a supplement not a replacement

Some folks often misunderstand the use of supplements and pharmaceutical drugs. Professional highly oppose the use of CBD by replacing the existing drugs in the treatment of cancer, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson’s. Remember, that CBD does not offer a cure but only helping reduce any undesirable adverse effects from pharmaceutical drugs. Replacing CBD may risk progressing of the disease, worsening the symptoms, and risk of death.

4. Be extra careful if pregnant or nursing

Though CBD has proven to have very little chance to have a risk of addiction and has fewer side effects. There is little research about CBD in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. A recent study of CD in August 2018 issue of Pediatrics discovered that cannabinoids can be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus.

Still, there are many tips and warning to cover about CBD, these are the main concerns that people should know about and take precautions. If certain conditions are met, try using CBD with low doses and increase the amount while monitoring the effects.

Neuropathy and CBD Oil: Looking at the Correlations

The worst kind of a pain in the body is something that doesn’t go away easily. Neuropathic pain is that type of pain and is challenging to treat. Unfortunately, describing this type of pain to doctors is troublesome for the patient. Because each person has its own unique description and the level of severity of the pain.

Though pain management is one of the keys, medications for it have serious side effects including addiction. Thankfully, CBD oil has reached the market of medicine and has been proven to help reduce pain.

Using CBD oil for neuropathic pain has a chance to prevent further damage done and help combat the immovable pain experienced. Because CBD affects our endocannabinoid system, it not only reduce pain but also targets other conditions in the body, hence, improve the health of the user.

Understanding Neuropathy

Neuropathy is damage or dysfunctional nerves caused by specific factors such as diabetes mellitus or leprosy. This cause cellular degradation of the nervous system that contributes to these dysfunctional nerves.

It happens when the damage nerve cells send incorrect signals to the brain, either causing agonizing pain or numbing the area that supposes to feel pain.

With damage nerves in some part of the body, it can lead to a dangerous situation like leaving your hand on the hot stove because you can feel any sensation of pain or pain felt in a place where there is no damage at all.

There is a different type of Neuropathy and each of them has unique and special symptoms.

Sensory Neuropathy- is the ability to experience sensations like touch or smell, specifically in the extremities. It results in the inability to smell, including mild tingling sensation in the fingers. In the worst case, the person cannot walk their own feet properly.

Motor Neuropathy-is the pain and degradation which affects the nerves responsible for controlling the movement of the body. It causes issues like muscle weakness, inability to lift things or carry their own body weight.

Autonomic Neuropathy -is the worst of the other three types. It is mainly nerves that carry information anywhere in the body. Including the heartbeat or bladder, sweat, and regulating the digestion. The problem around these areas will lead to death as it controls the vital organs.

Using CBD for Neuropathy

Cannabidiol is a non-psychoactive relative of THC that is derived from the Cannabis Sativa strain. It helps to deal with pain from chronic, acute, aches, including neuropathic pain. Since CBD is a type of cannabinoid it has the ability to communicate with the system in the body called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). It is responsible for controlling varieties of functions like inflammation and cellular growth.

Once CBD is consumed it connect with receptors of ECS that are CB1 and CB2. By doing, it boosts the signals in urging the body to heal faster using natural processes. CB1 receptors are located within the brain and the CB2 receptors function within the central nervous system and skin. It eventually results in managing and reducing the pain and prevent further nerve degeneration.

Opioids versus CBD

Most physicians helping treat neuropathic pain will often prescribe very strong opioid-based drugs. This is because it is hard to pinpoint the exact location of the pain and pain-relieving gels are not enough to completely manage pain. However, opioid type of drugs is extremely dangerous if abuse such as overdose, addiction, and risk of death.

CBD, on the other hand, still carries adverse effects like any other drugs out there but they are manageable and non-threatening.  Studies of CBD also shows that there haven’t been any records of overdose and drug dependency. For this reason, CBD is a good alternative supplement for treating Neuropathy.

Can CBD Oil Reduce the Risk of Congestive Heart Failure?

Cardiovascular Disease or CBD is a type of disease that affects the heart and blood vessels known as the circulatory system. The three cardiovascular diseases are coronary heath disease, stroke, and heart failure. Stroke and heart diseases are two categories that commonly leads to death.

Women are more at risk of developing cardiovascular disease a few years before their menopause. Treatment of the condition is complex and complicated treatments cause money, time, and energy. Which people CBD patients are now taking interest in natural supplements like CBD. Since Cardiovascular disease medicine has ugly adverse effects and prone to allergies, some patients have combined the use of natural medicines like CBD to help them fight the condition.

Combining The Use of CBD and Other Drugs for CVD

Because CBD products are still new to the market, many folks are still unsure about its use to a complicated disease like CVD. However, the use of CBD has been proven to show improvement in helping treat various heart and blood vessels conditions like hypertension, block arteries, vein inflammations, and heart failure.

Now that CBD is legally accepted by many developed countries the treatment and management of various cardiovascular diseases related symptoms are done by mixing these supplement and existing medications. CVD is caused by a lot of factors such as gender, age, or family history but most common factors are the inability to keep lifestyle in check. This results in high cholesterol intake, lack of physical activity, overweight and obesity, smoking, depression, and unregulated insulin level.

By taking CBD regularly as a daily supplement and periodic health checkups with your doctor managing CVD can decrease life-threatening signs and symptoms. It aids in managing your blood pressure to normal and regulates cholesterol level. This also helps decrease depression and other medical condition that triggers CVD condition.

Reducing Symptoms of CVD by CBD

Depending on the concentration and type of CBD used, it can greatly improve and reduce the symptoms associated by CVD by the following:

Reducing Blood Vessels Plaque-one of the major risk factor of CVD is building up plaque in the blood vessels. It mainly targets the vein and arteries’ walls causing the heart to have difficulty pumping the blood. Some studies relating to this condition shows that CBD intake can effectively help decrease the build-up of the plaque. It also reduces inflammations and protects while repairing worn-out blood tissues.

Regulates High Blood Pressure-It helps reduce high blood pressure by dilating the blood vessels in the body. Other than the anti-inflammatory properties it has, CBD is capable of vasodilating, thus, reducing the pressure and regulating blood pressure.

Antiarrhythmic Management-heart arrhythmia is where the heart beats too fast, too early, or irregularly. Most arrhythmias condition is harmless and is connected by anxiety and depression. Although, some special cases of arrhythmia is harmful that causes damage or cause perforated heart muscle. CBD’s effectiveness in helping arrhythmia is still unknown but it evident that managing the condition with CBD is working.

Anti-inflammatory Properties-Another symptoms of CVD is myocarditis or heart inflammation. It damages the cells and muscles of the heart due to inflammation and infection. The cause of it may relate to the body immune system’s reaction to viruses, bacterial infections, medications, and some certain chronic diseases. When taking CBD, it helps to reduce or even prevent any harmful inflammation and helping the immune system decrease the attacks that lead to heart inflammations.

With the help of CBD, managing the symptoms of CVD can be manageable. However to CVD related to obesity and an unhealthy lifestyle. It is important to stop bad vices and start improving becoming healthy. Doing so, CVD and other conditions can be prevented.

CBD Oil: An Alternative to Pharmaceutical Pain Management

Chronic pain can be frustrating and agonizing when the level of pain is too much. It either hides other serious problems or easily loses focus to people who experience it. Depending on the source of pain, some of them can be treated with pain medication. Unfortunately, other types of chronic pain are challenging to treat.

Which is why CBD has become plays an important role as a new alternative treatment than pharmaceutical drugs with dangerous side effects and potential attention.

Scaling the Level of Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is not only a normal injury, mild sprain or nagging headache. It’s a description and specific diagnosis rely on the duration of pain felt. It is considered to be a chronic level when it lasted continuously for 12 weeks or more. Comparing to acute pain that determines the part where there is damage in the body, chronic pain is constant pain with challenging ways to manage the pain.

Source of the pain can be from the injury or underlying illness and some cause is unknown. This kind of pain is often connected by:

  • Decreased appetite
  • Obvious mood swings and changes
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced strength
  • Restlessness
  • Inability to sleep
  • Anxiety
  • Limited movement
  • Depression
  • And more

Even doctors have a hard time diagnosing chronic pain until the source of the problem has been identified. With this in mind, formulating the correct treatment plan will take months or even years. Another issue when having chronic pain is the expenses by just obtaining the right diagnosis. Varieties of the test are needed to rule out all possible definitive answers. This includes MRI, CT scans, blood tests, and more and depending on where you live, the costs can reach thousands of dollars.

While waiting for the final diagnosis, doctors often give different kinds of medications and treatment that range from injections to opioids and more. Because CBD is not FDA approved yet, it is least likely to be recommended by doctors.

Currently, there are over 100 million Americans who are affected by chronic pain. Although, pain treatments have a variety of choices, curing it is very difficult and the treatment regime are also potentially dangerous.

The Introduction of CBD oil in the Market

The appearances of different studies relating to CBD has made people curious about what it can really do. From the previous research, it is evident that CBD can relieve pain including moderate to severe pain. From the results in 2011 in a form of clinical trials, it was shown that the effectiveness of non-intoxicating cannabinoid compounds such as CBD interacts directly with the neural pathways that control the pain. It offers a great alternative course of treatments for people who suffered in a different type of pain.

After that year, studies about CBD and its anti-inflammatory properties help manage pain that often relates to problems with the immune system. CBD does not make any analgesic tolerance which means withdrawal symptoms in the completion of the treatment will not likely to happen.

Using CBD for Chronic Pain

In every medication, there’s always the threat of adverse effects. Compared to other medication, CBD has fewer side effects and most of them are manageable. In fact, the side effects are not life-threatening and overdose from CBD is impossible.

When using CBD in dealing pain, it is important to know the underlying cause of it and prevent it from creating further damage. Despite CBD giving relief, it is “better to prevent than to cure.” Once the diagnosis is established, find the right type of CBD is the next step. Make sure to follow the guidelines in using CBD that is usually seen on the products label. Desirable dosages are included but it can be changed if the effect is too weak or too strong.

Keep in mind, that CBD is not FDA approved yet and mixing it with other medication might cause serious problems. Always consult a professional before changing the dosage or adding CBD to your medication.

In the period of time cannabidiol has been used to help aid pain relief, however, further research is required to understand its effects in long term use and safety concerns. The effects of cannabidiol may give more benefits than side effects but here’s how CBD works when used for the treatment of chronic pain.

Reaction of CBD

Cannabidiol is one of more than 120 compounds called cannabinoids found in the cannabis strain or hemp strain. Unlike marijuana with a very high level of Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, CBD does not give any euphoric or psychoactive effect. The reason is THC receptor does not collaborate with CBD.

The human body and most mammals like dogs and cats have an endocannabinoid system (ECS) which receives and communicates with cannabinoids. It is responsible for regulating important functions of the body like sleep, immune-system responses, and pain.

If the THC level of cannabis enters the body, it creates a “high” feeling that eventually affects the brain’s endocannabinoid receptors. It causes the brain to secrete dopamine acts as a pleasure chemical.

Relationship of CBD and THC

Depending on what type of extraction method and what kind of CBD is purchased, CBD is completely different from the chemical compound of THC. With the absence of psychoactive effect, the CBD influences the body to use its own endocannabinoids to boost therapeutic potential.

As stated in the study posted to Neurotherapeutics, CBD either activates or inhibits other compounds in the endocannabinoid system. As an example, CBD halts the body from absorbing anandamide, a chemical compound connected with pain. If the anandamide level in the bloodstream is increased, it reduces the level of pain a person feels.

In addition to relieving pain, CBD is capable of reducing the inflammation in the brain and nervous system which helps people who experience pain, insomnia, and certain immune-system reactions.

Potential Benefits of CBD to Pain-related Disorders

Even before the ancient times, CBD has been widely used to treat varieties of pain, however, the recent medical community just recently started the study of it. This requires more data, clinical trials, and research to fully understand how much CBD can do for us. Here are some common benefits you received from CBD.

Arthritis Pain

From the study published in the European Journal of Pain, it used animal models to observe if CBD could really help people manage arthritis and pain. The researchers conducted the study by applying a topical gel containing CBD to rats with arthritis for 4 days.

In just 4 days, the results prove there is a significant drop in inflammation and signs of pain without additional side effects. This has only been done in animals trials and requires more trials including human studies.

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease affecting the entire body through the nerves and brain. It causes muscles to spasm and some people who have MS causes pain. One report found that a short-term administration of CBD oil decreases the levels of spasticity and lessen the severity of other symptoms of MS.

Chronic Pain

Of all the studies accumulated in recent years about CBD including a separate study in the Journal of Experimental Medicine supports these results. It is evident that CBD can actually decrease pain and inflammation.

The researchers also added people using CBD in their study did not build up any tolerance to the effects of CBD. This means there is no need to increase their dose continually.

Because many studies have given positive results in helping not only pain but other ailments. It is safe to say CBD oil can help deal with pain management for long-term used. This also expresses improvement of the well-being of a person using it and prevents further damage to areas affected by the ailment.

CBD for Neuropathy: An Overview

Pain is defined as an unpleasant sensation that ranges from mild, localized discomfort to agony. It affects a person greatly both physically and mentally and can be difficult to express in each person. Because it is not equally similar to everyone, doctors way to ask the tolerance of pain is through pain scale from 1 to 10. Besides the severity of pain experienced with neuropathy, it is more complicated than that.

Neuropathic pain is challenging to handle as it is chronic, irritating, and agonizing for some people. It is usually connected with diabetes mellitus, though some neuropathic pain is caused by other factors.

Nerve pain felt is not an ache, bruise, or muscular pain that can easily go away if massage. Currently, there is no effective cure or solution which can successfully remove it. The best treatment so far given are therapies relieving pain and one of it is giving Cannabidiol.

What is Neuropathy?

Neuropathic pain may arise from irritated, damaged, or dysfunctional nerves. The damage received causes the nerve cells to send mixed signals to the brain and other bodily systems. Each person has its own description of what the pain is like and severity may vary according to their pain threshold.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the report state “An estimated 20 million people in the United States have some form of peripheral neuropathy, a condition that develops as a result of damage to the peripheral nervous system — the vast communications network that transmits information between the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) and every other part of the body.”

Types and Symptoms of Neuropathy are the following:

  • Symptoms include burning, muscle wasting and weakness, nocturnal pain, organ or gland dysfunction, and/or paralysis.
  • Paresthesia refers to the tingling, prickly, or numbing sensations you might feel in your extremities.
  • Digestion, sweating, sexual function, and urination may suffer from damage to nerves supplying the internal organs.
  • Allodynia is an abnormal sensitivity to stimulation, leading to an intense or distorted experience of touch.

There are various causes of nerve pain and some of them are associated with diseases like diabetes. Here is a list of the causes:

  • Traumatic Injury
  • Metabolic and Endocrine Disorders
  • Repeated Stress on certain muscles causing the area to be inflamed and damage via movements like elbow, wrist, or other joints.
  • Autoimmune Disease likes Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and Sjögren’s syndrome.
  • Vasculitis
  • Neuromas
  • Cancer Tumors
  • Viruses such as Epstein-Barr, West Nile, shingles, and herpes simplex.

Easing Neuropathy with CBD

In the study published in Neurotherapeutics stated that “Clinical studies largely affirm that neuropathic pain patients derive benefits from cannabinoid treatment.” Another article relating to the use of CBD study posted “Sativex successfully treats neuropathic pain characterized by allodynia.” Lastly, the Journal of Experimental Medicines came to the conclusion that “Cannabinoids suppress inflammatory and neuropathic pain by targeting α3 glycine receptors.”

The study relating to CBD and Neuropathic pain, chronic and acute pain is still ongoing and will continue their research. Currently, the THC effect on pain is clear by putting the user under the influence of its psychoactive properties resulting in distraction from pain or forgetting it was there (short-term memory). Unfortunately, the process of CBD working on pain in the system is unclear.

The clear evidence known to CBD is its ability to interfere with the absorption of anandamide. Anandamide is a fatty neurotransmitter sending messages on pain. CBD manage inflammation, autoimmune responses, and insomnia produced by pain. These benefits can be achieved only if the user takes it regularly with a proper dosage. Only then will it prevent and regulate neuropathic pain.

Since neuropathic pain is felt internally, it is advisable to a type of CBD particularly affecting the internal system such as capsules, sublingual oils, CBD gummies, lollipops, and beverages. It is also legally distributed in all states in America.

CBD for Neuropathy in Feet: What You Need to Know

Neuropathy is a disorder that happens when damage takes place in specific areas of the body causing pain. This disease affects one or more areas commonly seen in peripheral parts of the body which means our hands or feet. A lot of factors causes neuropathy and most of them have very few treatments available. The treatments main objective is to offer palliative care, giving as much relief as they can or reduce further side effects of their own.

Different kinds of neuropathy affect millions of Americans that CBD oil is potentially considered in treating the disease. It is a natural treatment with therapeutic pain-relieving properties. Although, research of CBD oil treating pain have shown promising results, will it have a similar effect with neuropathy?

Overview of Neuropathy

Neuropathy targets a specific system in our body called the central nervous system (CNS), it is comprised of the brain and spinal cord. CNS works side by side with the peripheral nervous system, responsible for carrying nerve from the CNS to different locations of the body.

The CNS has multiple layers of defense that protect the brains and spine from damage, these are the vertebral column, skull, and blood-brain barrier. Unfortunately, the peripheral nervous system is vulnerable that toxins, accidents, and even bacteria can easily injure it.

Damage to the peripheral nervous system will most likely result in peripheral neuropathy. This nerve damage is often seen in upper and lower extremities that may even progress over time.

Causes of Neuropathy

One of the most common causes of neuropathy is diabetes mellitus, in reality about 70% of diabetes sufferers experience nerve damage. This is due to the high blood sugar levels that potentially damage the cells in the body causing diabetic polyneuropathy. Other than that there are other potential causes for neuropathy in the feet:

  • Low vitamin levels such as B12
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Vasculitis
  • Chronic liver disease
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Some types of cancer such as lymphoma
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Excess alcohol intake
  • Physical injury to the nerves
  • Certain viral infections such as shingles or HIV
  • Medication side effects

There are many kinds of neuropathy but the symptoms are quite similar and it most likely targets the hands or feet. Here are the following signs and symptoms to watch out for neuropathy.

  • Loss of balance and coordination
  • Weakened muscles (this often affects the feet the most)
  • Less able to feel pain in the area
  • Numbness of the affected area
  • Tingling sensations
  • Burning sensation
  • Stabbing or shooting pains
  • Muscle waste
  • Low blood pressure
  • Difficulty walking or standing
  • Feeling pain from something that should not cause any pain
  • Muscle cramps
  • Twitching muscles

Using CBD for Neuropathy

In recent years, CBD oil has been helping patients with certain conditions in giving relief and preventing the spread of specific signs and symptoms. The common extremities to cause complication from neuropathy is most likely the feet. In this context, research about neuropathy using CBD oil has been done over the years and the result is quite positive.

Cannabidiol or CBD is derived from the cannabis strain or hemp strain with the absence of THC or has a low level of THC. This results in non-psychoactive effects and more to therapeutic benefits like:

  • CBD is a potent anti-inflammatory
  • Anti-anxiety
  • Antioxidant
  • Antiemetic (anti-vomiting)
  • Antispasmodic
  • Promotes bone growth
  • Neuroprotective
  • Potent analgesic (pain reliever)

Because chronic inflammation is the main concern of the nerve damage in the body, the CBD can effectively prevent further inflammation and reduce the pain in the affected area as well. Strong evidence about the use of CBD is proven in the research conducted years ago. An example of that study is the use of a spray branded Sativex in 2005 as the treatment for pain. Sativex is a combination of THC and CBD approved by the FDA to control cancer-related neuropathy. The outcome of the study proves that a huge reduction of the symptoms was observed to patients taking the Sativex medication.

CBD also reduce muscle spasms commonly seen in multiple sclerosis patients. With these results from studies about CBD. It is obvious that it gives more health benefits with very little issues of side effects. Besides the pain felt in neuropathy, CBD also helps manage depression,  anxiety, and other dangerous side effects.

Peripheral Neuropathy: Causes and Potential Treatments

It’s easy dealing with pain when we know the source and what medicine to use, however, in neuropathy, it is quite complicated than just taking an over-the-counter medicine. Neuropathy is a state when the nerve is taken damage by some factors and creates pain in a specific location in the body. The most common type of neuropathy is affecting the extremities.

Definition of Peripheral Neuropathy

The central nervous system which consists of the brain and spinal cord works hand in hand with the peripheral nervous system. It sends and receives signals from the brains and acts as a messenger. Traveling to the arms, hands, and feet to receive the signal of physical sensations then back to the brain.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is cartilage-restoration-knee.jpg

The Peripheral neuropathy is a disorder that happens when certain nerves malfunction due to damage or completely destroyed. It eventually disrupts the nerves’ normal functioning. Sending confusing signals like pain even though there’s no factor causing it or the opposite, experiencing pain but the brain didn’t receive any signal from the damaged area. This is because of the following:

  • Infection
  • Injury
  • Systemic Illness
  • Infection Inherited Disorder

Having to face this disorder not only affect the person physically but mentally too. Fortunately, treatments are available to reduce the pain and this includes the use of CBD oil.

Types of Peripheral Neuropathy

Over 100 different types of peripheral neuropathy exist. Each of these types has unique symptoms and special treatment options. It is identified furthermore by what type of damage and which part of the body is involved. When mononeuropathy happens only one nerve is damaged, however, polyneuropathies are most common and involve multiple nerves damage.

Symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy

There are three types of peripheral nerves affected. These are sensory nerves that connect to the skin, motor nerves connecting the muscles and autonomic nerves that connect to the internal organs.

As we mentioned before the peripheral neuropathy can either affect one nerve group or all of the three and symptoms include:

  • a weak, heavy feeling in the arms and legs, which sometimes may feel like your legs or arms lock in place
  • regularly dropping things from your hands
  • a buzzing or shocking sensation
  • thinning of the skin
  • constipation
  • digestive difficulty
  • diarrhea
  • excessive sweating
  • a drop in blood pressure
  • sexual dysfunction, especially in men
  • tingling in the hands or feet
  • a feeling like you’re wearing a tight glove or sock
  • sharp, stabbing pains
  • numbness in the hands or feet
  • Using CBD in Relieving Pain

According to the research published in the British Journal of Pharmacology, “Cannabidiol inhibits paclitaxel-induced neuropathic pain through 5-HT1A receptors without diminishing nervous system function or chemotherapy efficacy.” Another study has shown that “The non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) attenuates proinflammatory mediators, T cell infiltration, and thermal sensitivity following spinal cord injury in mice.”

This finding concludes that certain type of peripheral neuropathy called cisplatin neuropathy improves the well-being of the person and is safe to use during chemotherapy treatment.

Research about CBD alone in treating Neuropathy pain is limited but the ongoing studies show positive results about it. This is due to the anti-inflammatory properties and analgesic effects that prevent further damage and reduce existing symptoms.

Other benefits of CBD also includes, anti-oxidant, anti-anxiety, antispasmodic, promotes bone growth, and neuroprotective. The list can go on but these main therapeutics effects and improving a person’s health. Currently, there are no side effects or any drug dependence reported from previous studies conducted about CBD. But regularly intake of CBD may be required to get the optimum effects.

Because the treatment is still new to the public and in the medical field. Further studies of CBD and other medications being taken at the same time is required. It’s highly recommended to consult a professional first before using it and taking it with other drugs. Because some medication may give extreme toxicity or reduce the effectiveness of both medications.

CBD and Interactions With Other Pharmaceuticals

Supplements may lack nutrients a body needs that it can only get through eating certain foods. Individuals who are taking supplements may in fact not need what they are taking and what they are taking could produce adverse effects. (U.S. Air Force photo illustration/Airman 1st Class Daniel Brosam)

Different drugs interacting with each other is often seen in the elderly age where medications dealing with pain, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Geriatric population is now the fastest growing group of age in using medical cannabis. It displayed various effectiveness in relieving pain, and some phytocannabinoids are recommended in treating different kinds of metabolic conditions.

Hence, it is essential for both users and medical professionals to understand common pharmaceuticals, whether it is to prevent or predict negative interaction and if cannabis and pharmaceuticals can meet the requirements and result to a synergistic effect.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is Vitamins-and-Supplements-1-1024x632.jpg

The interactions of both drugs can work harmoniously and generate the desired effect with fewer side effects or do the opposite and cause danger and damage to the organs involved in the metabolism of the drug. Take, for example, a drug partnered with opiate can increase the potency of the painkilling effect which is highly possible to generate overdose. Another is a second analgesic could allow the dosage of an opiate to decrease its potency resulting to slow tolerance and decreasing other side effects.

There are many possible effects of drugs being taken and metabolized by the liver at the same time. However, users with very little knowledge or nothing at all about pharmaceutical will have a very hard time understanding the very detailed explanation of the process of drugs. By understanding the metabolic process between drugs is one method to estimate the possible drug interactions.

Cytochrome P450

Cytochrome P450 (CYP) is just one of the enzymes that metabolized half of all pharmaceuticals. It is a nonspecific enzyme that oxidizes a variety of molecules, letting the molecules more water-soluble and easier for the kidney to filter. This includes compounds like cannabinoids. Generally, interfering with CYPs activity in metabolizing a drug will increase the blood concentration. With very high blood concentration means high-risk cf efficacy and toxicity.

Prodrugs, on the other hand, are metabolized into the active compound. If the metabolism process is inhibited it decrease the desirable and adverse effects. Because of the complication of metabolizing drugs, it is easier to predict the outcome than guessing the exact effect.

Interaction of Cytochrome P450 and Cannabidiol

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive compound that hinders CYP1A1, 2B6, 2C9, 2C19, 3A4 and 3A5 with submicromolar potency, and increases the activity of CYPs 2B10 and 2B13. The THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol that produce psychoactive effects is potent in the same manner of obstructing the effects of CYP2C9 and weakens the other CYPs. Determined by the dosage of CBD administered, it greatly affects drug metabolism.

Interaction of CBD of Pain Medications

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) works mainly by hindering a certain enzyme in the body to reduce swelling. When NSAIDs and CBD are metabolized at the same time possible effects could result in the increase synaptic concentration of anandamide (major endocannabinoid). Which means it can give is highly possible to synergize the body with NSAIDs. It also potentially minimize the impact of gastric side effects.

Opiates are one of the power pharmaceutical drugs that have a high risk of complications if used wrongly. This can lead to tolerance, drug dependence, and withdrawal syndrome if suddenly stopped. The studies about drug interaction of Opiates and CBD contains limited resource. Oral CBD with dosages of 400-800 mg given with intravenous fentanyl did no show any increase of adverse effects. Similar effects were shown for morphine when THC-rich cannabis is vaporized.

Basically, Opiates and CBD regulates one another with the recent studies. Some study explains that it reduces the effects of opiates drugs and the other can possibly increase the addictive tendency. The most favorable opiate interaction of CBD and Opiates is through its modulation of dopamine and serotonin.

Although the research about CBD interaction with Pain medication is still in process. Most studies have shown positive feedbacks but more clinical trials need to done to prove CBD can go well with other medications.
